Willeke Versluis travelled to Zambia to live and work in a township in Lusaka in March 2005. Here she became particular impressed by the lives people lead in these townships. Seen from this perspective, life is a true struggle for survival. Most people don’t have jobs and shocking statistics indicate that almost half of the population is infected with HIV. Each day it is uncertain whether there is food on the table, houses are not connected to streaming water and a hole in the ground serves as a toilet. Kids in these townships are most vulnerable. Most of them lack the support and shelter of parents or family who can take care of them.
Back in the Netherlands and fueled with these experiences, Willeke felt the urgency to do something for these kids and she found two other enthusiastic volunteers, Simon van der Veer and Ilse van der Veer, and together they set up SchoolChild Africa (Ku Sukulu Africa). The road started with a project in Zambia; arranging sponsors to support the development of children and the support of the building of a new primary school, together with a local organization: King World Missions. However at a certain point it became clear that the ‘way of working’ of King World Missions was not aligned with SchoolChild Africa. In good understanding we decided that King World Missions would continue the building of the school independently and that SchoolChild Africa would no longer support. King World Missions keeps us updated on the progress of the building.
Since September 2007 we are active in Kenya by supporting the building of a Vocational Training Centre: read more about our projects.
A diverse group of people are involved in the foundation; read more about the people within SchoolChild Africa.
